Education: A lifelong commitment to learning


Refocused efforts are required to improve the quality of education


Strategic context


SDG 4 calls on all countries to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.


According to The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2018*, more than half of global children and adolescents are still not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics. Refocused efforts are required to improve the quality of, and disparities in, education along the lines of gender, location and other dimensions. More investments in education infrastructure are required, particularly in the least developed countries.


OFID’s commitment to the education sector remains strong. As of December 2018, cumulative commitments to education operations amounted to $1,086.7m.

In 2018, $3.35m of approvals to the education sector were made under OFID’s Grants and Technical Assistance window. This sum was allocated to a number of capacity-building initiatives, including the

sponsorship of 10 winning OFID Scholar- ship applicants, providing education for Palestinian and Syrian refugee children in Lebanon, rehabilitating schools in East Jerusalem and enhancing entrepreneurial training in East Africa.
