OFID IN ACTION Agriculture: Rehabilitating cropland in Guinea

The multi-faceted project will help boost food security in vulnerable households.

Project title: Family Farming, Resilience and Markets in Upper and Middle Guinea Program (AgriFARM) Amount: $25m Mechanism: Public Sector loan Co-financiers: BADEA, IFAD, government of Guinea

In December 2018, OFID approved a $25m loan to Guinea to help finance a multi-faceted project aimed at alleviating poverty and enhancing food security in vulnerable house- holds.

Despite a favorable climate and fertile soils, Guinea remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Grappling with food insecurity, undernutrition and low household incomes, the country is still recover- ing from the aftermath of the 2014-2016 Ebola crisis.

Agriculture is the mainstay of Guinea’s economy, accounting for 19.5% of GDP in 2017 and providing employment for nearly 70% of the population. Small subsistence-orient- ed family farms predominate, with smallholders farming on an average of 1.8 hectares (ha). Although Guinea’s arable land is estimated at 6 million ha, only around 3.3 million ha are cultivated. The government of Guinea, therefore, has accorded high priority to scaling up public invest- ment to develop the agriculture sector and tap into its unused potential.

The OFID-funded project supports this objective, with activities including, among others, the development and rehabilitation of 37,500 ha of cropland. Also planned is capacity building, the creation of water-user

associations and providing inputs such as fertilizer and seeds. Technical training in modern farming tech- niques will also be provided.

OFID’s loan will specifically fund the rehabilitation and / or construction of infrastructure to optimize access to marketplaces: namely 850 km of rural roads, four trading platforms and 22 collection centers.

The project will ultimately benefit around 455,000 people and is expected to create jobs both during and after its implementation, in particular for young people and women.
