CHAPTER TWO • OFID OPERATIONS BY SECTOR
Water and sanitation: Scarcity, flooding and management
Too many people still lack access to safely managed water and sanitation
Strategic context
The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2018 by the United Nations states that too many people still lack access to safely managed water supplies and sanitation facilities. Water scarcity, flooding, and lack of proper wastewater management also continue to hinder social and economic development. It is vital that regions and nations work to increase water efficiency and improve water management, to balance the competing and growing water demands from various sectors and users.
By the end of December 2018, OFID had approved a cumulative amount of $1,407.9m for the water and sanitation sector, representing 6.3% of total approvals.
Activities in 2018 OFID committed $166.5m
to the water and sanitation sector in 2018
In 2018, OFID committed $166.5m of development finance to the water and sanitation sector; the majority of which financed public sector projects. These projects include two loans to Argentina ($50m and $60m) to help provide safe and reliable access to potable water and raise health and living conditions. Cuba will expand water infrastructure in the eastern part of the country via a $25m OFID loan and two loans
to Malawi ($15m and $12m) will be used to upgrade water infrastructure.
The remaining amount of $4.5m was committed by OFID via grants: to help reduce the incidence of cholera, trachoma and other water-related diseases in African countries; improve slums in Greater Monrovia, Liberia; expand infrastructure in the Shu’fat Camp in Palestine; and promote water partnerships in Africa and Asia-Pacific.
