SPECIAL FEATURE THE PROJECTS

SECTOR: HEALTH PROJECT: HEALTH FACILITIES IMPROVEMENT STATUS: ONGOING FINANCING: US$26.5 MILLION (2014) AND US$6 MILLION (2019)

The OPEC Fund’s 2014 loan is helping rehabilitate the Academic Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) and construct six Primary Health Care centers (PHCs) as well as a Central Pharmaceutical Depository (CAM). The newly-signed supplementary loan will help supply medical equipment and furnishings, including information communications technology. Rehabilitation work has to date been completed on four floors of the AZP, which continues to be fully operational. The CAM has also been completed, as have three PHCs. The project is expected to be totally finished by December 2021.

Faucia Poese, Assistant Medical Director, AZP Hospital The Academic Hospital is the biggest hospital in the country and delivers the most services. We’re the only one with an emergency department that runs 24 hours a day. We also have the most equipped trauma and intensive care units, and are the only one to perform neuro-, open heart-, and eye-surgery. I’ve been at this hospital since I was a medical student.

54 percent Some

of people a year are estimated to benefit from improved access to quality healthcare.

The rehabilitated building makes a huge difference. It’s so much nicer and looks clean. Everyone is more willing to work, willing to work longer hours, and willing to improve the care they deliver. This is going to have a very positive effect on the whole country. Patients used to say: I don’t want to go to the Academic Hospital. Everything is old, broken, but I have to go because the care they deliver is not delivered anywhere else. Now patients are more eager to come.
