Highlighting inequality through data


On one of many rooftops spanning the skyline of Beirut, Lebanon, more than 60 young people from 14 Arab countries gathered for the beginning of Visualize2030: an opportunity to imagine and influence the future of the Arab world by using data. An expert team of data scientists, graphic designers and advocacy experts were on hand during the five-day event to help


collect and analyze data, and to advise on visualization techniques. The young people, grouped into teams, were tasked with highlighting and explaining inequality in each team’s home country and proposing workable solutions to challenges including gender inequality, city planning for people with disabilities, waste management and education.


TEAM SANAD FROM SUDAN


Team Sanad shed light on undocumented children – a result of poverty and war – living in Sudan. The children do not have access to many of their basic rights, the team explained, such as education. Sudan ranks highest in the Arab world for the number of children out of school (2.4 million).

Index loses one-quarter of its value when adjusted [for] inequality,” explained Sarah Poole, Deputy Director, Regional Bureau for Arab States, UNDP. “The loss is largely due to inequality in education. This is frustrating for all. This is why we have asked the Visualize2030 youth to visualize inequality and what they strive to change.”
