“This is a job you have to do with love and respect. We’re here to serve people. If you don’t do that, you’re not a nurse.”

Faucia Niamut, Nursing Director, AZP Hospital I work with 900 plus nurses and five nurse managers.

Quality patient care is what matters most to us. This is a job you have to do with love and respect. We’re here to serve people. If you don’t do that, you’re not a nurse. In the beginning, the construction noise gave

Francis Amanth, Project Manager, AZP Hospital We tried to make the hospital more humane – more patient-friendly – with this rehabilitation. We didn’t want a sterile, white space so we put in some color. Green is for patient rooms; blue is for bathrooms and wet facilities; orange for storage. This makes it very easy for people who cannot read. You can tell them: go to the green door. We also created a separate family room on every floor because in Suriname, when your family member is dying, the whole family will come. Here they can sit with their loved one, pray, and accompany them in their last moments without disturbing other patients. Every floor will have a medium care room, with monitors and

oxygen, where we can provide special treatment. When a patient doesn’t feel well, we won’t have to rush downstairs to bring them to intensive care. We’ll be able to take care of them on the same floor. We also moved the nurses' stations out into the corridor. When

a nurse is stationed here, she has a front to back overview of who’s coming. Someone coming from the elevator doesn’t have to call for a nurse. They’ll just see her. That’s one of the ways we are able to give better service.

Patients were disturbed too. But as soon as the first new ward opened, everything was good. We’re so glad for this opportunity from the OPEC Fund.
