FOOD PRODUCTION
Mozambique’s food production output (on an aggregated basis) jumped spectacularly in the late-2000s. This was driven by a combination of good weather, increased inputs made available to small-scale farmers, and better post-harvest processing and storage efforts. Suriname also experienced a surge in output due to greater mechanization, bringing new land under cultivation, and redeveloping old plantations. the country faces challenges of increased soil salinity in the Nile Delta and land ownership characterized by the prevalence of small parcels of land that undermines potential economies of scale. Viet Nam has for many years been able to steadily increase output, helped by strengthened institutional and policy frameworks along with support provided by its Socio-Economic Development Plan 2016-20 – particularly the New Rural Development component.
