SURINAME Suriname is located on the

northeastern coast of South America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south, and Guyana to the west. 90 percent of the country consists of tropical rainforest. Suriname’s estimated 560,000 people are among the most ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse in the world. The large majority live in coastal areas, in and around the capital and largest city, Paramaribo. Dutch is the official language though other languages (primarily Sranan Tongo and English) are widely spoken.

(AZP), proved a highlight of the trip. Three other floors have already been rehabilitated while the hospital continues to be fully operational. Dr Alkhalifa toured both old and new facilities, visiting patients as well as staff, to gain insight into the improvements this jointly financed (with the government of Suriname) project will bring to healthcare services in Suriname now and for years to come.

“The OPEC Fund is a true partner who was there to support

Suriname during the worst days

of the economic crisis. When our health project was in a difficult situation, we were able through joint efforts to bring the project

back on the right path. We are very proud that as a result the project is currently being implemented according to schedule.”

Minister of Finance, Gillmore Hoefdraad
