Fatima

Anton

What were you doing before joining the OPEC Fund? Fatima: Prior to the OPEC Fund, I worked as a Senior Advisory Consultant to the Rural Electrification Agency. We set up the Rural Electrification Fund in Nigeria while also developing renewable energy mini-grid projects for electrification. In addition, I was lecturing in Finance and Entrepreneurship at Baze University, Abuja, Nigeria.

Anton: Before I joined the OPEC Fund, I was working with the United Nations (UN). My most recent assignment was at the Peacekeeping Mission in Bangui, Central African Republic. Prior to that, I was based at the UN in Vienna combatting organized crime, and before that, combatting human trafficking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

You’ve been at the OPEC Fund for a little less than two years. What have been the highlights? Anton: I knew about development from an ‘implementation’ perspective: that is, receiving funds from governments in order to implement UN projects. Here at the OPEC Fund, I’m a step removed from that. We don’t directly implement projects; we provide the financing, and this is a new world for me. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to learn more about the mechanics of development financing.

Fatima: Every project I have worked on so far has its own highlights – each has been a unique learning experience and a point for professional growth. The Private Sector and Trade Finance Operations Department (PSTFOD) offers a diverse set of financing products, and I’ve been exposed to nearly all of them, which has further enriched my experience. I’m currently on the rotation program, which has also been a valuable experience in better understanding the key functions and responsibilities of other departments within the organization.
