45 Language Guides The course contains a vast amount of information about the English accent. Not all of this information is relevant to you.
A Chinese native speaker will have different challenges to a Spanish native speaker when learning English pronunciation. A Chinese person may be able to do some English sounds perfectly because those sounds already exist in Chinese, whereas a Spanish person may need to learn these sounds because they are not in the Spanish language. For this reason, you are guided through the course according to your native language.
The lessons are ordered so as to prioritise improving your intelligibility (i.e. people understanding you) and making the biggest accent differences. I suggest that you follow the order, but you don’t have to.
Every learner will be at a different level. If the pronunciation information in a lesson is something that you do already, then simply move to the next lesson.
I am aware that there is much variation within each language. For example, a French speaker from Paris will sound very different to a French speaker from Quebec. However, both of these speakers will usually have similar challenges when approaching a language like English.
Here are some points to remember:
1. When learning a new sound, follow the instructions in the How To Practise Guide 2. It’s important to listen to different voices. Find other native speaker recordings/videos in the Listening Resources 3. If you’re not sure if you’re doing it right, go to the Using Your Senses Video
