No Voicing Assimilation Practice Identify the voiceless consonants followed by voiced consonants in the text:
127
I’m feeling a bit depressed. It was my birthday last Monday. This year I’m ninety-six years old. I got a black dog from my sister. It’s a Welsh Border Collie. Whenever I pass by the dog, she starts barking. I’ve called her Bridget Jones, because she looks very much like the actress who played her in the film. Each day, after checking Facebook, I make delicious dog food and take Bridget for a walk in the park near where I live. I wish that I was a bit younger so I could run as fast as Bridget.

How do I revise this?
- Practise the phrases and text with the audio. o Ensure you do not explode the voiceless consonants strongly.
- Focus on common phrases in your daily speech
o let’s do that / let’s go / let’s move o close by, across the o first one, first week o must be/go/do o I like the o make the, left the, much better o miss the bus, football o just before / it’s just like / I just need / I’m just going / just because o last January/month/Monday
- Listen to native and non-native English speakers. Don’t be afraid of asking people to repeat what they’ve said so you can secretly listen for voicing!
