November, 2016 - Sisters in a Bentley tear-gassed and robbed in $5 million Paris jewelry heist PARIS — For the second time in two months, thieves — relying on surprise and precision timing — have gotten away with millions of dollars in jewels and left authorities with few clues but much embarrassment.

The latest targets were two Qatari sisters in their 60s headed into Paris on Monday from Le Bourget airport, where private planes often land. Masked men stopped the Bentley carrying the women, sprayed them with tear gas and made off with no less than $5.6 million in jewelry and other valuables.

The shocking incident came just two months after a reality TV icon and Instagram maven was tied up and robbed at gunpoint in an exclusive private hotel during Paris Fashion Week.

In recent years, there have been a number of similar robberies in the same area. Police say criminals favor the portion of highway around the lengthy Landy Tunnel because of the steady flow of wealthy travelers who frequently pass between Le Bourget or the bigger Charles de Gaulle International Airport and the city. In a tight, contained

environment, there is often traffic gridlock — plus plenty of exit routes so assailants can easily escape.

Initial reports indicate that he was suffering mental health issues.

August 28, 2008 - U.S. Dept of State Coordinates Rescue of Kidnapped 3-year-old

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS) helped coordinate the rescue of a three-year- old American citizen in Guatemala. Three armed assailants approached and kidnapped the young girl when she attempted to board a school bus in front of her residence in Antigua, Guatemala the morning of August 27, 2008. During the afternoon of August 27, the victim’s mother began negotiating with the kidnappers by phone with the assistance of FBI and CAS hostage negotiators. The kidnappers requested a ransom to secure the girl’s release, and provided proof that she was alive during the negotiations.

While these phone negotiations were underway, the Embassy’s Regional Security Office was able to provide Guatemala’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit critical information on the whereabouts of the kidnappers and the victim. On the morning of August 28, Guatemala’s Anti-kidnapping Unit successfully rescued the girl. All five kidnapping suspects were killed during the rescue operation.
