DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE

FedEx Flight 705 was the scene of an attempted hijacking of a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30. On April 7, 1994. Auburn Calloway, an off duty FedEx Flight Engineer, was due to be fired for lying on his résumé about his previous flying experience. He boarded the San José, California-bound aircraft, which was loaded with electronic equipment bound for Silicon Valley, intending to murder the flight crew with hammers, and then use the aircraft for a kamikaze attack on FedEx Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. Calloway’s plan was unsuccessful.

About twenty minutes after takeoff, as the flight crew carried on a casual conversation, Calloway entered the flight deck and commenced his attack. Every member of the crew took multiple hammer blows which fractured both crewmembers skulls. A lengthy struggle ensued with the flight engineer and captain.

The flight crew eventually succeeded in restraining Calloway. The crew was able to fight back despite severe wounds, subdue him, and safely land the aircraft.

Calloway pleaded temporary insanity but was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences on August 15, 1995, for attempted murder and attempted air piracy. The crew was left with permanent, disabling injuries and have not flown professionally since.

His reason for using hammers was so that the injuries inflicted would resemble those occurring in a plane crash — Calloway wanted to disguise the attack as an accident so that his family would benefit from his work’s $2.5 million life insurance policy. As a last resort, he was also armed with a speargun, smuggled on board in a guitar case.

INADEQUATE PERSONALITY

March 20, 2000 PASSENGER ATTACKS FLIGHT CREW A sweating, mumbling passenger aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 259 from Puerto Vallarta to San Francisco smashed his way into the cockpit. Peter Bradley Jr., 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, began taking off his clothes. . . first his socks, then his shirt, then apparently decided that disrobing wasn’t enough, so he pretended to shoot passengers with his “pistol” finger. Then, he jumped up, battered his way into the cockpit and began struggling with the copilot. The captain yelled to passengers for help, and seven brave souls jumped Bradley and wrestled him to the floor of the cabin. The PIC decided on an emergency landing and Bradley was taken into custody by law enforcement officers meeting the aircraft. The court has required Bradley to undergo psychiatric evaluation. He denies remembering any of the events of his behavior.
