LOOKING FOR MORE WELCOMING SIGNS
We brought our panel of experts to the headquarters of D&M Creative in Barrowford to talk hospitality and leisure
Q: How important is having the right strategy for today’s hospitality and leisure sector?
MR: One of the things we’ve seen in the last two years is that there’s been a move away from having a clear strategy to businesses being very tactical.
They’re trying lots of different things and are not really understanding how everything works tied together.
You can do different things digitally with trial and error, even if it’s a loose strategy, but it can be challenging to understand what’s working and what’s not.
If you ever wanted a reason to understand why it’s important to have strategy, it was reported last week that 52 per cent of all job losses in
the last quarter were in the hospitality sector.
JN: Our sector has so many moving parts, both internally and externally. Without a clear strategy, it’s very easy to be distracted by the noise.
We must make sure that the team are aligned on what the vision of the business is and what our values are.
It’s important to work on goals, objectives and how we’re going to deliver them, especially now, when we have got battered by measures in the chancellor’s Budget.
RE: I’ve got very clear three-year goals and strategy. However, you’ve still got to be really flexible, because things are changing all the time.
That’s where dynamism comes in. I’m building brands, so I’ve got to find the right fit for the consumer.
I’ve got to deliver the right product. ‘Do I choose a high-end or low-end brand?’ That’s the choice that is probably at the front of everyone’s mind.
As a brewer I have the same labour constraints as everyone else, with national insurance and everything else going up. But I have also got duty charges that have an impact on cost.
RS: Without a strategy, Park Hall would still be an abandoned hotel site. It was closed for nearly for four years during Covid.
We have got Raddison accreditation in record time and we are multi-finalists in several awards. Entering awards is an important
