TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Employers are increasingly prioritising practical skills, industry knowledge and experience, alongside academic achievement. Apprenticeships and T Levels are at the forefront of this shift.

Apprenticeships combine paid employment with structured off-the-job training, enabling apprentices to earn while they learn and achieve nationally recognised qualifications. They are available to both school leavers and adult learners, offering a direct route into skilled employment while allowing employers to develop their own talent pipeline.

Linzi Monks, director of apprenticeships and employer engagement at Preston College, says: “Apprenticeships are about opportunity – for apprentices and for employers. They allow individuals to build confidence, competence and career direction, while making a meaningful contribution in the workplace.”

Alongside apprenticeships, T Levels provide a high-quality technical route for 16-19

year olds. Equivalent to three A Levels, they combine in-depth classroom learning with a substantial industry placement of at least 45 days. This blend of academic study and practical experience gives students a strong foundation for skilled employment, higher apprenticeships or further study.

Linzi adds: “T Levels offer a clear and high- quality pathway into skilled careers. They are academically rigorous but also deeply practical, giving students valuable industry experience that builds confidence and ambition.”

And this year, Preston College is bringing both routes together for its inaugural Apprenticeship and T Level Combined Open Event.

Hosted at the College, the event will give students and parents the opportunity to explore two of the most career-focused education pathways available. By bringing apprenticeships and T Levels together in one dedicated event, the College will demonstrate why it continues to be the ‘first

choice for technical education’ among its students and employer partners; playing a vital role in closing skills gaps and creating clear, confident routes into employment.

The combined event reflects Preston College’s commitment to informed choice. Visitors will be able to meet tutors and advisors, speak to employer partners, and learn about progression routes and entry requirements.

DEVELOPING THE SKILLS OUR COUNTY BUSINESSES NEED

Across Lancashire, businesses are adapting to change at pace. New technologies, evolving markets and increasing competition mean that having the right people, with the right skills, has never been more important.

At the University of Lancashire, we work closely with employers to ensure skills development is practical, relevant and aligned to real workforce needs.

Our Degree Apprenticeships are built in partnership with industry, enabling organisations to grow their own talent while employees gain qualifications that directly support business performance.

Our Enterprise and Engagement Unit provides hands-on guidance from initial enquiry through to programme delivery.

Whether an organisation is recruiting new talent or upskilling existing members of staff, we ensure the apprenticeship journey

is structured, aligned to business objectives and straightforward to navigate.

Apprenticeships are not only a pathway into employment; they are a powerful mechanism for developing current employees, building leadership capability and supporting succession planning.

For businesses looking to recruit an apprentice, our Apprenticeship Matching Service offers a free recruitment solution. We take time to understand each organisation’s requirements and match them with high-calibre individuals seeking apprenticeship opportunities, ensuring a strong fit from the outset.

Our support extends beyond apprenticeships. We also collaborate with businesses through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), continuing professional development and applied research, helping organisations innovate, strengthen capability and bring new ideas to life.

As Head of Enterprise and Engagement, I see every day the difference that strong university–business partnerships can make.

When we align academic expertise with industry ambition, we create opportunities not only for individual learners, but for organisations and communities across Lancashire.

If your organisation is reviewing its workforce strategy or exploring apprenticeships, we would welcome a conversation.
