There are thousands of SME businesses that are desperate. We’ve got an ageing workforce in what would be classed as less sexy types of role, but these are really important to key sectors that we support, such as hospitality and the furniture industry.


Furniture manufacturers are desperate for sawyers. If you can encourage a young person to invest two or three years of their teens, they could be earning £60,000- £70,000 at the end of that time.

We’re really lucky that we’ve got an apprenticeship scheme that goes from level three to six, so we can take straight from school right up to degree apprenticeship level.


The demand for degree apprenticeships is much higher at the moment. When we get approached by students, whether that be via parents or careers fairs or whatever it might be, that’s what they’re looking for.


We were involved in an event a couple of years ago at the AMRC. Local employers came together and delivered a session to careers leads in schools.


It was all about linking subjects to pathways. If you’ve got somebody in your class that’s good at maths, what does that look like, other than

It always troubles me when we’ve got people who get two thirds of the way through a furniture apprenticeship and have a mate who’s got a job packing boxes at Amazon and is on a little bit more money, so they follow them.
