SHOWCASE GREEN
WORKING TOWARDS A GREENER RED ROSE COUNTY The green revolution is upon us.
Whether your motivations are altruistic, to preserve our planet for future generations, or business, to reduce outgoings and win tenders, there is no doubt that we live in an era when going green matters.
Today’s businesses are judged upon their environmental impact. Customers can be selective. As can investors. Public sector contracts often require environmental assurances. Private sector tenders increasingly do, too.
There are many ways of reducing environmental impact. The three Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle - offer a simple but effective framework.
Within each of these are a multitude of options.
Over the next three pages we have profiled a range of Lancashire businesses who are excelling in their responsibilities to be kinder to our planet.
We have drawn together a wide selection, from restaurant chain to car leasing company, to underscore that it does not matter in which industry you ply your trade, you too can play your part.
This showcase includes businesses inside and outside of the green sector. We have included specialists who have helped others to reduce their environmental impact.
The goal of this feature is not only to highlight excellence, but to inspire others to follow in their footsteps.
Hopefully, some of the ideas discussed within this feature are new to you, and you are able to consider introducing them to your own organisation.
Or maybe you’ll be inspired by the creativity on display and will be able to think in a more
critical and innovative way about your own processes and outputs.
And, ideally, when you’re shopping around for products and services, you’ll think harder about the environmental credentials of those you buy from. Because as this showcase demonstrates, there are plenty of greener options to be found here in Lancashire.

About us
We’re a charity offering adult and young persons counselling services to the Blackpool and the Fylde area. Our team of more than 40 volunteers delivered more than 6,000 hours of counselling last year and we have closed more than 1,000 cases since launching five years ago. We’re also proud to be a finalist in the Health and Wellbeing Category at the Red Rose Awards.
What we’ve achieved
Our line of work could generate a lot of paperwork, but by digitising our processes we’ve cut our paper use by 80 per cent. We’ve switched to cartridge-less printers which means we’re not sending the empty ones to landfill, and we’ve installed infrared panel heaters which use less energy and save us money. My own humble contribution is taking our leftover coffee grounds home for compost.
The rewards
Firstly, cutting our energy costs means there’ll never be a time we can’t afford to put the heating on. Secondly, when people see us I want them to know that not only will we do right by them, but also by the planet. And thirdly, while we’re relatively small now, when we grow these initiatives will help keep our environmental impact small.
About us
We’re an environmental consultancy and compliance scheme, supporting and empowering organisations to achieve their sustainability obligations and aspirations - whether they’re mandatory or voluntary goals. We specialise in carbon management and ESG, packaging sustainability, plastic packaging tax and extended producer responsibility, as well as fulfiling the legislative requirements of obligated companies under the waste packaging, WEEE and batteries legislation.
What we’ve achieved
We switched to a renewable electricity supplier, reducing our energy consumption to zero emissions, and reduced our total gross emissions by 36 per cent last year. We reduced business travel by 88 per cent against a pre-pandemic baseline. We have signed up to the Race to Zero campaign and the CEE Bill as well as the Better Business Act. We are currently at the verification queue stage of the application process for B Corp accreditation.
The rewards
As well as making our planet the best place it can be, adopting environmental initiatives helps your business increase efficiency and cut costs, attract financial investors, gain a competitive advantage, motivate your employees and increase customer loyalty. It also prepares you for future environmental legislation.
