DIGITAL MANUFACTURING EXPERTS HELP IT FIRM BOOST PRODUCTIVITY AND REDUCE WASTE

A Burnley-based IT business received a boost in ‘confidence and financial security’ after AMRC North West engineers used digital support to transform its work processes and shop floor layout to expand its capabilities and output quality.

Rapid IT works within IT asset disposal, data destruction and is a hardware recycling specialist. The company’s growth was impeded by a lack of usable space - with AMRC North West finding ways to increase efficiency, productivity and reduce waste across its services and production processes.

Victor Giannandrea, non-executive chairman for Rapid IT, said support from AMRC North West, part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), gave the company the confidence to look for new business – and helped them secure two major customers.

Through its RADAR programme, AMRC North West, based on the Samlesbury Enterprise Zone in Preston, offers fully- funded manufacturing support and collaboration opportunities designed to boost competitiveness and productivity for Lancashire’s small and medium-sized (SME) businesses.

Iain Martin, senior engagement manager at AMRC North West, part of the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, said the automation team worked with Rapid IT over two projects.

“Our team helped map out Rapid IT’s processes to smooth out production flow and increase productivity,” said Iain. “We also produced process flow charts, which can be modified as Rapid IT grows.

“This led to the second assist, which created 2D/3D models of the premises, alongside a virtual fly through of its workshop, helping to optimise usage, equipment acquisition and increase the efficiency of product movement.”

Co-founder and Managing Director of Rapid IT, Jack Bannister, said the biggest project improvements increased efficiency in processing assets, better data sanitisation and reduced customer wait times. He added: “The warehouse design was also beneficial for cash flow, being able to process IT assets for resale quicker, providing a faster turnaround on replenishing funds, alongside reducing our carbon footprint.”

The project was delivered through the AMRC North West’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded projects.
