62 BURNLEY
Neil, a native of Newcastle in the north east of England, arrived in town in at the end of 2020. He says: “I’ve been hugely impressed by the passion for Burnley, not only in VEKA, but across all the businesses in our borough.
“This was evident within the first hour of my interview for my role at VEKA with Dave Jones.”
He is also excited by the work that has begun that is looking refresh the private sector led, private/public partnership Bondholders group; work which he explains is very much in its early stages.
He says: “Bondholders has been a massive success story. As someone relatively new to it. you don’t always appreciate some of the things associated with Bondholders and the work that has been done.
“It’s been a challenging time for our town over the past couple of years, but I’ve been amazed at how the Bondholders and other businesses, along with our community groups and residents, have pulled together during this period.”
Neil says that discussions have now begun to look at “the big picture” and the aim is also to engage with Bondholders to discover what they take from the group and what they need from it moving forward.
Neil says: “We’re asking, where do we really want to go with this and how do we go about getting there?
“We want to understand what it is people value, why they are part of it and what is going to matter to them in the future.”
He adds: “There is no sense that Bondholders is not working, it’s just a case of taking a look at it and deciding where we want to go with it next.
“There’s a huge sense that being part of Bondholders is being part of Burnley. That is brilliant, what we are looking at is how we turn that passion and commitment to the area into something that could be even bigger.
“It is also about keeping it relevant. We are at an early stage, and it will probably take a little while to come to fruition.

“At the end we will have a brand-new purpose, we will then look about how we go about delivering against that.”
One project that he is keen to explore is a programme to support the development of Burnley’s future business leaders. He says: “It’s a good example of how we could do some good and be more proactive.”
Networking is a big part of the Bondholders experience, giving members a valuable insight into the thinking of the council and what is behind some of the big strategic projects.
It also gives Bondholders a chance to come together and share best practice, ideas, suppliers and resources.
Neil says that will remain an important role of the organisation. However, he adds: “It has to be more than that. We have to add more value into the town and the community.”
