Brexit, pandemic, war in Europe and now the rising costs of doing business. No-one can say we don’t live in challenging times.

Businesses in all sectors are facing up to those challenges on a daily basis. One of the biggest of those issues is the cost of energy.

In our new feature reporting on the green economy, we take a long-hard look at the government’s new energy security strategy – published in response to the challenges the country faces.

The plan is strong in its long-term ambitions and, as we report, Lancashire businesses are poised to play a significant role in the work to create a domestic low carbon energy industry.

If it delivers, up to 95 per cent of the nation’s electricity could come from low-carbon sources by 2030.

It includes policies on nuclear, wind, hydrogen, solar, oil and gas, and heat pumps as sources of energy production.

However, industry experts believe the lack of any mention of energy efficiency and support for energy reduction in the strategy is a major missed opportunity.

And there is still the pressing problem of rising power bills today – and the impact our businesses are already feeling.

It’s a topic that our columnists, including our new contributor Antony Higginbotham, Burnley’s MP, rightly concentrate on.

Antony, who we welcome to our publication, believes to tackle the current energy crisis we need to show the same ambition and urgency that was on show during the pandemic.

Frank McKenna takes another line, advocating the case for cutting VAT on fuel bills and suspending the ‘green levy’ on energy costs.

Whatever your take on the situation, it is a problem that is not going to go away any day soon and it’s a conversation we will return to.

The energy crisis has also re-ignited another debate in Lancashire – to frack or not to frack.

Supporters of shale gas extraction have been energised by the 12-month postponement of an order for exploration company Cuadrilla to permanently seal two Lancashire wells and the government’s commission of a scientific review “to advise on” the latest scientific evidence around the process.

It’s the latest chapter in the fracking saga and again we will be watching closely and reporting developments.

One source of energy that shows no sign of diminishing is the determination that drives the county’s young people in business.

From woodcraft to the Internet of Things, Lancashire’s young people are making a real impact in the business world in a whole range of sectors and in our Sub36 showcase we highlight just some of the talent at work.

Their stories, I’m sure you will agree, are tremendously impressive.
