Achievement is not about the certificate; it is about the whole journey.


An apprenticeship is a vehicle to take your through different parts of your career as an individual. It is about your progress, your destination.


From the organisation’s point of view the vehicle of an apprenticeship can really develop an organisation, bring it up to being able to compete.


In Lancashire we are battling to retain our youth, our expertise and our skills and not lose them to the bigger cities nearby.


Achievement can be seen by just being able to retain that workforce and being able to compete in a really competitive market out there.

We have been looking to build up future succession planning. We currently have 10 apprentices out of a head count of 75, in various departments: accounts, online services, marketing, payroll - they are throughout the business.


The objective for us in terms of apprentices was to ensure those that are doing a professional qualification are also learning the soft skills and that they put the theory into practice to show they can apply that.


For us, it is amazing to see our staff grow and develop as well as us growing as a business. We have an individual who started in A Levels and decided it wasn’t for him and wanted to look for another opportunity.


We employed him as an apprentice and he started in admin, worked through that and began professional payroll qualifications. He went through a three-year programme and has now become manager of the department. It shows what you can do.

It starts at the very beginning through understanding the business’ needs and the long-term strategy, the culture and values.


If you get that right at the beginning, your retention will remain, you’ll get long-term members of staff, then you’ll see your succession planning.


You will see learners going from apprenticeships right through the business and on to long-term goals. Business related projects can also make a big impact.


You can see daily achievement; the smiles on people’s faces, the engagement, the day-to-day challenges they overcome, the resilience they get and the development of their personal skills.


Then at the end point, the assessment they go through is quite intense. The achievement there is amazing, as they go on to further their careers.
