SHOWCASE GOOD EMPLOYER

WORKING TO BE THE VERY BEST

The Covid-19 pandemic and resulting lockdown combined are said to be forcing a major shift in how the working world will look in the future. The changes are largely being driven by the workers themselves.

The pandemic caused many individuals to reflect on life and reassess their values and priorities. The lockdown and ‘working from home’ showed that there is often more than one way that business can be conducted.

For those who have been paying attention, it’s long been known that pay is just one way for organisations to attract, motivate and retain talent.

However, many employers are now learning this for the first time, to their surprise. Their employees have new demands of the companies they work for.

Fortunately, Lancashire employers have long been on the front foot in this respect. The county has more than its fair share of organisations represented on ‘best companies to work for’ lists, and the Red Rose Awards has included a best employer category since its early years.

Some of the county’s most recognisable names have competed alongside their smaller but no less influential neighbours to take this trophy home. Each year brings truly impressive stories into the spotlight.

Over the following pages, we look inside organisations of various descriptions to explore the innovative and rewarding ways in which they care for their employees.

There is no set-in-stone, step-by-step guide to becoming a great employer. But it always starts with understanding what your employees - as individuals more than as a group - value.

By Tim Aldred

And it is also about creating an environment that allows people to flourish, to gain skills and confidence, and to advance in and outside of the workplace.

The rewards are clear. Each of the organisations in this showcase is successful in its field, and each credit the dedication of its staff as a key factor.

About us

Preston City Council is a district council based in the heart of the city, working to deliver quality services, support the local economy and deliver a comprehensive fairness agenda to residents.

How we support our employees

We are proud to be a nationally accredited Living Wage Employer, having paid the Living Wage to our employees since 2009 – the first Real Living Wage employer in the North.

We strongly believe that paying a fair and reasonable wage to our employees in turn boosts our local economy, and creates more wealth, opportunities and jobs.

How the Living Wage helps our organisation

We believe that people deserve to be paid a fair and reasonable wage, and that this is not only a key component of a strong local economy, but also a strong and resilient business.

Paying your staff the real Living Wage (or above) has been shown to improve the quality of service a business or organisation can provide because of improved motivation and productivity.

It also improves your work environment, staff attendance, attracting and retaining quality employees and retaining them.

There are also reputational benefits, which can help attract new business.

How the Living Wage helps our city

It has been shown to have a number of wider impacts – including far beyond the workplace.

Research has shown us that employees who are paid a Real Living Wage benefit from spending more time with their family and have the ability to buy more goods and save more money.

Preston City Council is extremely proud to have been a nationally accredited Living Wage Employer since 2012. As a City Council, we pay a Living Wage to all of our employed staff as well as all contracted agency staff.

This has had a very positive impact on the delivery of our services as well as providing both economic and social benefits throughout the city.

How the Living Wage can help you

There is conclusive evidence that becoming a Living Wage employer benefits both employees and the employer.

A Living Wage will allow your employees to earn a decent wage, improve their motivation and productivity and they will feel valued.

As a Living Wage employer, you are more likely to have a productive workforce, attract and retain staff, and appeal to new businesses and customers.

The values associated with becoming a Living Wage Employer, as well as the wider economic and social benefits, can be experienced across the city, and indeed the county.
