A GROWING SUCCESS STORY

The growth of Lancashire’s scaleup sector has been described as one of the county’s real economic success stories over the past decade – with no signs of its momentum slowing.

Figures show the county outperforming some big city economic powerhouses when it comes to scaleup businesses and the potential for further growth.

Amin Vepari, business finance and scaleup lead at Lancashire County Council, says: “In 2025, the government released its Modern Industrial Strategy and a recent report by GC

compared with 705 in the 2020 report, an increase of almost 38 per cent.”

The growth is helped by the support ecosystem that exists in Lancashire, including Two Zero, operated by the county council. The service has worked with 143 Lancashire scaleups since 2020 with dedicated help to tackle key scaleup challenges.

Amin says: “Over recent years, the county’s businesses have increasingly caught the eye of the UK investment community.

“Companies like Fuuse, Redmoor Health, Audiebant and dozens more have raised

happens in distinct phases, and each one demands a different type of energy, focus, and patience

Insight showed Lancashire outperformed the UK average for scaleup potential in four of the eight key industries outlined in the strategy.”

He adds: “The latest figures from the Scaleup Institute show the county’s scaleup density has grown by an average of two scaleup businesses per 100,000 population each year in the past 10, higher than areas such as Liverpool City Region, the West Midlands and Glasgow.

“However, it is the past five years where the Lancashire scaleup community has really thrived. This year’s Annual Scaleup Review showed 970 scaleup businesses in Lancashire

significant investment to fuel continued growth. As well as being brilliant success stories to inspire other scaleups, the journeys of companies like these grow Lancashire’s knowledge base of what it takes to grow a business at speed.”

He adds: “With the strong alignment between Lancashire’s scaleup potential and the sectors the UK government sees as key, combined with the growth of the county’s investment and knowledge sharing community, the expansion of the Lancashire scaleup sector shows little sign of slowing in the future.”

businesses cannot be overestimated. Despite accounting for 0.8 per cent of the business population, scaleups contribute £2.19trillion to the UK economy, around 50 per cent of total economic output, up from £1.4trn in the previous year’s report.

The 2025 scaleup review also assessed the key barriers to scaleup growth across the UK. The biggest challenge is access to UK and international markets, followed by talent and leadership development and access to bank and equity finance.
