TAKING A FIRM LEAD
An ambitious £20bn-plus growth plan, local government reorganisation and economic headwinds that continue to blow hard. These are challenging times for Lancashire.
Our leaders in business, the public sector and politics will play a vital role in charting the right course as the county moves towards devolution and works to fulfil its economic potential.
Mo Isap is a prominent leader in Lancashire. The successful entrepreneur chairs the Lancashire Business Board.
Made up of leaders from the county’s foremost regional, national and international firms, the independent body was set up as part of the county’s current devo deal with the government.
He adds: “We have people who are very, courageous, bold, doing amazing things and they create brilliant businesses, and we have many examples of people doing that.
“We also have great civic leadership and there are people who want to do good things.”
However, he acknowledges there are challenges and there is a need for a more unified approach, with leaders from business, politics and the community all coming together in a more co-ordinated way for the benefit of Lancashire.
He says: “We’ve got too many pockets. We need to pin together that respective talent in one place and be able to harness it.”

He is also founder of the IN4 Group, a technology company based in the North West, designed to give every individual access to high quality skills training.
Giving his views on leadership in Lancashire, Mo, who received an OBE in the New Year Honours list, says: “There are people who are extremely talented and are doing great things.”
The need to encourage more people to take on leadership is also an area where he sees need for improvement.
“We have to show people how to become a leader,” he says. “It’s not straightforward but people still want to make a contribution. If you’ve got the leadership capability, then we’d like to have that.”
He adds: “I am a massive advocate for going out Mo Isap LANCASHIREBUSINES SV

to the global diaspora of Lancashire and saying to them, ‘come back, we need your leadership’.
“We need to speak to people who grew up here but who moved out and went to London or elsewhere. If we’re going to scale mid-market businesses we’re going to need those leaders.
“I did a speech at the Royal Society of Arts and this guy came and he said he grew up in the Ribble Valley, left for London and now is a vice chancellor of a university.
“I said, ‘We need you to come back’. We need this talent to run these companies and institutions because these people are passionate about Lancashire.”
