LEADERSHIP WILL SHAPE LANCASHIRE’S FUTURE GROWTH
By Dr Adrian Wright, deputy head of the School of Management, University of Lancashire
Helen McVey, chief executive of Pendleside Hospice
A leader needs to be empathetic, a good listener, take time to do your homework properly and be a real team player.
You need to gain the trust of those you work with whether that be in your own organisation or working collaboratively with others outside your business.
Ultimately, it’s about working together to create that vision for the future but accepting when things need to change and adapting when required.

I’ve worked in lots of other organisations, but working in hospice care is different. People want to do a good job, and we’re all pulling together.
The Lancashire Combined County Authority (LCCA) has published a Growth Plan setting out how the county will build on its position as one of the UK’s leading economic powerhouses.
Its aim is to deliver growth between 2025 and 2035 with a strategic focus on exploiting the potential of five high-growth business sectors around existing and proposed ‘transformational’ projects.
The ambition in its pages is clear. What is also clear is the importance of leadership and management development to support the plan and deliver that growth to drive forward our economy.
The ‘right kind’ of leaders will be needed if Lancashire is to fulfil the ambition contained in the pages of the plan.
The leaders who take us forward must
prioritise workforce development and have the vision and skills to unlock the full potential of their teams.
It can be hard to attract and retain talent. Good leadership can help in that by providing the right culture and conditions in which people can thrive and develop.
That is why it is so important that we give leaders and managers the skillsets they need to be effective and ensure they have the right attitude. A renewed focus on the fundamentals of people management is vital.
Yes, the Growth Plan is about strategy and economic development. But essentially it is people who will deliver it. If we can get that part right, then we will get to where we want to be.
