Backward Departure There may be times when you will have to sail the boat backward to leave the dock.
A Back away from the dock
Push the boom out all the way in the direction you want the bow to turn (in this case to the port), and back the jib on the opposite side. Center the tiller. Cast off the bow line. The boat will sail backwards, away from the dock.
2 Turn away from the dock As soon as the boat has cleared the dock, turn the tiller toward the mainsail (the same direction you want the bow to turn).
3 Sail away from the dock When the sailboat has turned out of the No-Sail (No-Go) Zone, release the jib sheet and trim it on the correct (leeward) side, trim in the mainsheet, and center the tiller.
