Acknowledgments Ray Wichmann Author
At 30 years of age, with six years of college, no degree, and living on the beach in Hawai’i, Ray became a sailor. His first experience was crewing on a sail and snorkel boat in Kona, on the Big Island. This was followed by 10 years as an inter-island charter skipper. When he returned to the mainland, he accepted an instructor position at OCSC Sailing on San Francisco Bay and has been teaching there for 30+ years. He has sailed in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean, on boats ranging from eight to 150 feet, with one, two, and three hulls. He is a US Sailing Master Instructor Trainer, and a member of US Sailing’s National Faculty.
Margaret Pommert Co-Author Seattle-based Margaret Pommert learned to sail as a teenager and became an avid sailboat racer and cruiser. She enjoys co-leading annual flotillas of recreational boats up the Inside Passage from Washington to Alaska. As a US Sailing/US Powerboating instructor, instructor trainer, and member of the National Faculty, she has worked with a wide range of US Sailing schools and students, and enjoys being part of a team teaching new keelboat instructors for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis during the summer. In 2020 Margaret was recognized with the National Women’s Sailing Association/Boat U.S. National Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award.
Karen Prioleau Contributor Karen Prioleau directs the Professional Mariners Program at Orange Coast College in Newport Beach, CA. A lifelong sailor and professional captain, she has cruised all over the world, including a four-year voyage through Mexico, French Polynesia, and New Zealand, as well as offshore voyages to Easter Island, Hawai’i, and Alaska. Currently, she is a Master Instructor Trainer for both US Powerboating and US Sailing, and chairs the US Sailing Keelboat National Faculty curriculum committee that develops training materials for US Sailing.
