Sailing Concepts & Terminology


Entering the nautical world is a very exciting endeavor. However, it can be a bit overwhelming at the same time. Not only are there entirely new concepts and ideas to absorb with new physical skills to master, but there is also a new language to learn. “Do sailors really talk like this?” The answer is yes, they do; and soon you will too! This chapter of sailing concepts and terminology will help you to become familiar with determining wind direction and understanding how a sail works. You will also learn a variety of nautical terminology and be able to identify the parts of a sailboat, rig, and sails along with being introduced to some key sailing concepts.


UNDERSTANDING WIND Being able to understand wind, how it moves,


its velocity, and patterns will help you harness the wind to move your boat forward. There are many indicators, both on land and water, that you can use to determine the velocity and direction the wind is coming from.


l Direction - Identify the direction the wind is coming from.


l Land Indicators - Identify two wind indicators on land.


l Water Indicators - Identify two wind indicators on water.
