HOISTING THE SAILS Before hoisting your sails, the boat should be
pointed into the wind. The mainsail is usually hoisted first, as it will help keep the boat’s bow into the wind until you are ready to cast off. If departing from the windward side of a dock, it may be preferable to hoist the jib first, sail away, and then hoist the mainsail once clear.
You should now have both sails up and luffing with the boat aimed directly into the wind. The boat is still secured to the dock.

Loosen the Cunningham/downhaul and boom vang. Center and tighten the traveler controls. Loosen the reefing line and remove any sail ties from around the mainsail and boom. Release the mainsheet. Re-check the main halyard to make it is not twisted round the mast or shrouds.
Begin hoisting the mainsail with slow and steady pulls. Look up the mast to check that the sail is going up smoothly and that the luff of the sail is staying attached to the mast.
Mainsail should be luffing so it will go up more easily. Wrap the main halyard around a winch if it becomes difficult to hold and use the winch to tighten the main halyard for more luff tension. Secure and coil the main halyard.
HOISTING THE MAINSAIL TIP
Feeding the mainsail luff into the slot of the mast as it is raised helps keep the sail from jamming in the slot.

SAILS UP AT THE DOCK TIP
Make sure the mainsheet and jib sheets are loose and free to run. This allows the sails to move freely in the wind so the boat doesn’t start sailing at the dock!
DERIG & LOWER SAILS Once you have completed your sail, you will need
to derig and stow the equipment. The process will be in the opposite order as rigging. It is the crew’s role to make sure everything is stowed, secured, and shipshape before leaving for the day.
STOW BOAT:

Everyone should clear the foredeck and move back to the mast or cockpit. Make sure both the jib halyard and the jib sheets are clear and untangled. Sheets should be lead to the cockpit and free to run. Raise the sail with the jib halyard. Finish hoisting by using a winch and winch handle to properly tension the jib luff as necessary. Secure and coil the jib halyard.
l Head to Wind - Position boat upwind and raise or lower sails in the head to wind position.
l Derig - Lower and derig sails properly and detach all attachment points.
l Stow Sails - Flake, furl, or roll the sails when dry.
l Shipshape - Demonstrate stowing and securing all equipment, gear, and lines for boat to be left unattended.
l Secure - Double check that all lines securing the sailboat to the dock or mooring are the correct length and use the correct knot.
