WIND SHIFTS
UPWIND Even the steadiest breezes will shift (change direction). These shifts, ranging from subtle to quite substantial, play a significant role in how you sail upwind. When the wind shifts, your No-Sail (No-Go) Zone shifts with it. This affects the course you can sail. When the wind shifts aft, you are able to head up and sail more directly toward your destination. When the wind shifts forward, you must bear away and sail a less direct course to your destination. If the wind shift is large enough, you should tack because the new tack will allow you to sail closer to your destination than your current one.
WIND SHIFT TIPS
E A wind that shifts aft and allows you to head up is called a lift.
E A wind shift that shifts forward and forces you to bear away is called a header.

2 Lift (wind shifts aft)
The wind has shifted aft, which also moves the No-Sail (No-Go) Zone aft. This allows the driver to head up.
3 Header (wind shifts forward) The wind has shifted forward from the original direction, shifting the No-Sail (No-Go) Zone forward. The boat’s course is now in the No-Sail (No-Go) Zone and the driver must bear away until the boat is on a close-hauled course again.
