SKILL EVALUATION

Chapter 3 | Preparation to Sail

USING A WINCH Winches are devices that assist you when adjusting

the tension on a line. They are commonly used on halyards and jib sheets. The friction of the line wrapped around the barrel of the winch (ordinarily in a clockwise direction) reduces the load you feel when holding the line. The number of wraps needed will vary, depending on the size of the sail, the strength of the wind, and the crew’s strength.

l Thumbs Towards You - Grip line with thumbs towards you.

l Prepare the Sheets - Remove any slack in the sheet.

l Load Winch - Wrap the line clockwise from bottom to top around the winch.

l Insert Winch Handle - Grab the winch handle and insert it into the top of the winch.

l Trim, Grind & Tail - Tension the line by grinding and tailing.

l Secure- Secure line in cleat or self tailor and store the handle.

WINCH SAFETY TIP

The winch will be under a heavy load, and it’s important to avoid fingers getting trapped between the line and the barrel when adding or removing wraps.

LOADING THE WINCH Grasp the line with thumbs towards your body and lead it clockwise around the winch. While leading the line around the winch keep your hands at least a foot from the winch itself.

Grasp the line with you thumb towards your body. Take slack out of line and place it around the right side of the winch.

Make a clock-wise rotation around the winch to add a wrap. Your palm should twist up as you bring the line around, leaving your thumb pointed away from winch at all time.
