HOW A SAIL WORKS Sails are a sailboat’s “engine”, and they produce power in one of two ways. When the wind is coming


from the side of the sailboat, it flows around both sides of the sail (like an airplane wing), creating lift which “pulls” the sailboat forward. When the wind is coming from behind the sailboat, it “pushes” against the sail and moves the sailboat forward.


PULL MODE Your sail is much more efficient at using the wind than your hand. It is shaped to bend the wind as it flows by, creating higher pressure on the inside of the sail U and lower pressure on the outside U, thus creating lift. The lift the sail creates tries to “pull” the sailboat forward and sideways. The sailboat’s underwater surfaces (hull, rudder, and keel) resist sideways motion, and the sailboat moves forward through the water.

If you hold your hand out the window of a moving car, you can feel the force of the wind lifting your hand. This is the same force that “pulls” a sailboat forward when the wind comes over the side of the boat.
