Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat BROOME, AUSTRALIA
Set on a remote stretch of Kimberley coastline, 80 miles south of Broome, Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat sits between the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and the vast expanse of Yawuru Country. Surrounded by pindan cliffs, white sand and native bushland, it offers a rare sense of seclusion in one of Western Australia’s most striking landscapes. Known to its Traditional Owners as Yardoogarra, it’s here that Eco Beach Wilderness Retreat has been welcoming guests for more than three decades. The property offers 48 rooms spread across the
dunes above the beach and the ethos is barefoot rather than formal. Safari-style glamping tents sit among the scrub, their canvas walls opening to the night air. Eco Villas offer garden, ocean-view or complete oceanfront outlooks. The Beach House sits directly above the sand with its own kitchen, deck and beach access. An infinity pool overlooks the beach, with views across the ocean. Jack’s Bar & Restaurant, named after the
mangrove creek behind the property, sits above the dunes on an open-air deck facing west
across the ocean. The kitchen showcases local Kimberley produce and ocean-to-plate seafood, while sunsets shift from copper to violet in the space of 20 minutes. Between June and September, the waters offshore become a migration route for humpback whales, and fortunate guests may spot them from the deck. Stays shape themselves around the coast.
Travellers can bookend their days with sunrise and sunset beach yoga, kayaking to a cave illuminated by a natural blowhole skylight, joining a guided fishing session on the creek or taking a scenic helicopter flight along the coastline. There’s also the option to book in to the Dragonfly Day Spa for treatments such as the Mud & Bubbles experience, combining a mangrove mud treatment on the beach with sparkling wine and a rinse in the ocean. After dark, with little artificial light for miles
around, guests can fall asleep beneath a sky crowded with stars. Shoes come off. Screens lose their purpose. The 80 miles between Broome and the front gate isn’t simply part of the journey — it’s part of the experience.
