PAID CONTENT FOR KODDU KALPITIYA

Koddu Kalpitiya KALPITIYA, SRI LANKA

Koddu Kalpitiya is a boutique retreat comprising six individual villas set across four acres of waterfront along the Kalpitiya Lagoon. Each villa features spacious accommodation with white and cream interiors, extra-large double beds, light wood furnishings, a semi-open bathroom and a private terrace overlooking the lagoon. Koddu’s name carries rich historical significance.

During the early 1900s, Mannar Bay was renowned for its pearl industry, attracting traders from across Asia and the Arab world. The land on which the resort now stands was known locally as the ‘Pearl Garden’, and was where pearl auctions were held. The huts used to store the pearls were known as ‘koddu’, and the resort name is a tribute to this heritage. The property’s position affords guests sweeping

views across the lagoon from its central facilities, which include an infinity swimming pool with sun terrace, a large open-air dining room, a spacious lounge and a bar designed to capture the cooling lagoon breezes. Dining focuses on local ingredients and seasonal produce. The restaurant presents Sri Lankan

cuisine alongside a selection of international dishes and fine-dining creations. Fresh seafood features prominently, complemented by herbs and vegetables grown in the hotel’s garden. Meals are accompanied by a thoughtfully curated wine list, fresh juices and locally inspired flavours. While Kalpitiya is best known for kitesurfing,

nature and adventure are equally central to the Koddu experience. Guests can explore the marine life of Bar Reef, embark on dolphin- and whale- watching excursions and discover the rich birdlife that inhabits the surrounding mangroves and protected islands. The surrounding landscape also provides

access to some of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding wildlife experiences. Local boat excursions include journeys along the Kala Oya river, which borders Wilpattu National Park. One of the country’s oldest and largest protected areas, Wilpattu is accessible from Koddu via a lagoon boat transfer followed by a safari. Wildlife sightings may include elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and peacocks throughout the year.

DON’T MISS Take a boat trip through the mangroves to a 450-year-old church
