PAID CONTENT FOR THE OVERHANG

The Overhang KIGAMBONI , TANZANIA

Along much of the Indian Ocean coastline, the beach comes with company. Vendors move between sunloungers, music drifts from neighbouring resorts and days fill quickly with organised activities. At The Overhang, on Tanzania’s southern coast, the experience is notably different. Set across more than 100 acres of coastal

wilderness in Kigamboni, south of Dar es Salaam, the property was never designed as a traditional beach resort. Instead, it offers something increasingly rare: space. Space to walk along the shoreline, spend hours by the ocean and experience a slower pace shaped by nature rather than schedules. With just six villas and five beach tents spread

across the property, many guests compare the experience to staying on a private estate rather than in a hotel. There are two private beaches and a coastal forest, creating an environment where uninterrupted time outdoors comes naturally. Many travellers arrive at The Overhang at

the end of a Tanzanian journey. After safaris, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or travelling through the country on demanding itineraries,

the property offers an opportunity to slow down before returning home. Food has become one of the defining parts of the

guest experience. The property’s small scale allows the kitchen team to focus on quality, flexibility, and personal service rather than volume. Fresh seafood, seasonal produce and coastal influences shape menus inspired by the region, while returning guests are often welcomed by name and with a familiarity usually associated with staying among friends. Beyond the property, Kigamboni reveals a

lesser-known side of Tanzania’s coastline. Fishing communities continue traditions shaped by the sea, while nearby conservation initiatives help protect important marine turtle nesting habitats and wildlife. Guests can explore by kayak, paddleboard, bicycle or on foot, discovering a landscape often overlooked by travellers focused on safari circuits. While some beach destinations are known for

their lively atmosphere and constant activity, The Overhang offers a quieter alternative, with private beaches, uninterrupted ocean views and space to truly switch off.

DON’T MISS Enjoy private beaches, ocean sunrises and uninterrupted time on Tanzania’s coastline
