Temple Point WATAMU, KENYA
Temple Point sits on a headland where Mida Creek meets the Indian Ocean, its tropical gardens appearing as though nature designed them itself. Barefoot paths connect bungalows and quiet corners throughout the grounds, creating an effortless sense of arrival. Vegetables served on the property are grown in its own greenhouses, cared for with the same attention guests receive throughout their stay. The resident monkeys have never read the guest
handbook — they move through the gardens on their own mysterious missions, adding to the feeling that Temple Point is a place to observe rather than control. A secluded mini beach, set within the Unesco-recognised Watamu Marine Park, offers some of the coast’s best snorkelling, while the on- site dive school opens up the underwater world. One of the property’s most memorable
experiences takes place at Musafir, a floating dining and bar setting on Mida Creek, reached by boat from LichtHaus. Guests arrive at dusk as the mangroves begin to darken, with dinner shaped around the natural surroundings. LichtHaus itself sits above the water on netted decking, known for
its sunsets, daily barbecues and occasional jazz evenings. Elsewhere, CreekHaus Spa, Gym & Tonic fitness studio, a yoga deck beneath a majestic baobab tree, KunstHaus Boutique and A Liddell’s coffeeshop complete the experience. Beyond the property, Watamu offers remarkable
history and wilderness. Arabuko Sokoke Forest, one of East Africa’s last significant coastal forest reserves, lies nearby, while the Gede Ruins reveal the remains of a Swahili town that flourished between the 13th and 17th centuries. Temple Point carries its own link to this past, with ancient ruins, believed to date back centuries, standing within its gardens. For those looking further afield, Tsavo East National Park is around 90 minutes away, offering the chance to encounter red-soil elephants, lions and cheetahs beneath evening skies. Watamu remains wonderfully unhurried, around
two-and-a-half hours by road from Mombasa, with properties spaced along the coast rather than crowded together. July to March offers the best conditions, although warm waters make the distinction less important.
