PAID CONTENT FOR THE HALCYON PRIVATE ISLES MALDIVES, AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION

The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives GAAFU ALIFU ATOLL, MALDIVES

In the southern reaches of the Maldives, The Halcyon Private Isles is one of the country’s most remote sanctuaries. It spans two private isles — one naturally formed of ancient coral sand, the other crafted over a tranquil lagoon, joined by a dedicated boat that runs day and night. There are 38 villas and they’re some of the most spacious in the Maldives, ranging from beachfront and overwater retreats to The Halcyon Grand Estate — the crown jewel reserved for weddings and milestone celebrations. Each villa offers direct access to a living reef, where around 40 resident sea turtles glide through the shallows. The property draws its quiet intellect from

H C P Bell, the British archaeologist who charted these waters aboard the royal schooner Fath-ul- Majid in the early 20th century, documenting hidden Maldivian artefacts and calling these seas ‘restorative’. His curiosity is the resort’s spiritual ancestor, woven through the architecture and the Bell Bar, where sunset cocktails carry his name. Dining is a key part of the experience. Yuzu offers refined pan-Asian plates, Thari spans

Mediterranean and multi-cuisine fare, and Yapa, an overwater sunset bar, offers guests a considered sake programme. There’s also The Firepit, where the local catch of the day is hauled in at dawn by local fishermen in creaking wooden boats and then grilled slowly over smoky coconut husks. Service at The Halcyon Private Isles moves on

intuition. The Halcyon Butler anticipates guests’ unspoken needs, while the diving-trained Marine Butler guides guests through coral gardens Bell once described in vivid detail. For families, there’s the Faru kids’ club and the young oceanographers programme, where children learn to anchor coral fragments and read the reef. Beyond the villas, guests can embark on

signature experiences including the equator crossing, big-game fishing in the deep southern waters, and the Huvadhoo expedition through one of the world’s largest natural atolls. Back at the resort, the overwater spa draws on the elements of earth, water, air and fire, with restorative treatments that provide a fitting finale to a journey through the Maldives.

DON’T MISS Enjoy a sandbank dinner with no other footprints, served beneath the southern stars
