DOMOTEX SHOW TIME 06

WELCOME After a year which saw the industry having to communicate in

new ways, we’re all looking forward to being able to engage properly again. In the meantime, the message remains as powerful as ever

There’s a lot of talk about sustainability and resilience in the fl ooring industry, but usually, it refers to products and processes. These days it’s even more pertinent in relation to the industry as a whole. And in the current climate, that’s something to celebrate. Key fi gures around the world have been quietly acknowledging one

comforting - and one could almost say inspiring - fact. After facing a year of disruption, the like of which few have seen in their lifetimes, the future looks as bright as ever. Despite all the uncertainty, the key drivers that, 12 months ago, were predicting a market worth around $250.8 billion by 2024, are still there. We are still building and remodelling and there’s a healthy consumer interest in new products. In short, had Deutsche Messe been able to open its doors as hoped in January, there would have been a healthy footfall and just as impressive an array of exhibits to inspire and, in the circumstances, reassure. DOMOTEX organisers had to a show level of fl exibility unlike anything they had ever faced, planning into the unknown, always with an eye on

safety, always with a Plan B close to hand. By late last year, two thirds of the exhibition space – about 62,000 square meters of it – had already been booked and a hygiene concept had been developed. But as the pandemic grew ever-

more rampant, it became clear that clients, exhibitors and visitors alike were keen to delay and a hybrid concept was mooted, with a new date scheduled. Plans for a digital event were made in its place but that, too, had to give way to the inevitable. Now all eyes are on 2022 and, hopefully, a return to normality. DOMOTEX Director Sonia Wedell-

Castellano gives her insights into it all in an interview with me in which she discusses the challenges. You can read that on Page 20. In the longer-term, you can rely on this magazine to keep you up-to- date with developments, based on the knowledge that, in an industry that spends its time looking down - things are looking up!
