Product demand for resilient fl ooring materials is set to rise with an expected increase in construction and renovation projects, according to a report by the San Francisco-based Grand View Research Inc which predicted the adhesives sector would reach $7.1 billion by 2027, expanding at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 5.4 per cent. The building and construction sector, it noted, relies on a range of adhesives for various applications, such as ceramic tiles, carpet, fl ooring underlays, as well as resilient fl ooring. Further growth in the grout and tile adhesive sector is expected thanks to the rise in the adoption of thermally treated tiles and the growing popularity of outdoor entertaining areas, according to The Middle East North Africa Financial Network which named key players as Ardex GmbH, Arkema Group, BASF, Dow, Henkel, Laticrete International Inc, Pidilite Industries, Saint-Gobain Group, Schomburg GmbH & Co. KG, and Sika AG.

a beautiful rug can pull a space together

and give it a certain

cohesion as well as adding colour and texture. They also have practical benefi ts on a deck by, for instance, protecting the surface in areas that get a high level of footfall, which in turn, means dirt. Then there’s the scuffi ng and scraping from furniture, particularly if it’s well used. But you have to be aware of

potential hazards and risks when it comes to the right kind of material. Take, for example, composite timber decks. They’re made from recycled timber fi bres and polymer,

a synthetic compound bonded in molecular chains, a process that helps create a strong and durable surface that looks like the real thing. They won’t deteriorate when subjected to bad weather, they tend to

be rot-resistant, anti-splinter, warp resistant, crack resistant, and UV- treated for fade resistance, all elements that enable them to stand up to friction from most outdoor rugs. You also have to be aware of those that come with the sort of backing

that can damage a composite deck through staining, scratching or discolouration. So too can those backed with latex or rubber, or fi xed with metal grommets and accents. These may scuff your composite decking, or rust and cause discolouration. The ideal ones are those made from traditionally woven polypropylene,

or recycled plastic with a soft backing that won’t scuff , scratch or absorb moisture, avoiding mould and mildew, which can build up beneath them. Another tip is not to cover it immediately, leaving it exposed for a season to ensure even, natural discolouration.
