Organisers went to extraordinary lengths to keep the 2021 event alive and, even as the Covid crisis saw the cancellation of the first physical event in 32 years, solutions were still being sought

Substantial eff orts had been made to prepare the way for an infl ux of visitors and exhibitors to Hannover to mark the New Year with an exhibition worthy of such an important sector. The wide international reach and high-calibre visitors, such as top decision makers, had long established DOMOTEX as the leading trade show for fl ooring. In January last year, 70 per cent of visitors came from abroad to witness the eff orts of exhibitors representing more than 60 countries, so expectations for a similarly successful 2021 were high. However, events dictated otherwise and, in keeping with hundreds of other exhibitions around the world, organisers had no option but to postpone on the basis of ongoing Covid uncertainty, the reluctance of many to travel and quarantine regulations. Before any decision had been made, two thirds of the exhibition space – about 62,000 square meters – had been booked and a comprehensive hygiene concept had been developed to comply with safety regulations. Deutsche Messe AG later took the important decision to postpone the next edition to May 19-21, reorganising it as a digital days event with the focus being an online conference that would address current
