In times of darkness, the world needs colour. But does that mean one that fills us with hope or one that exudes reassurance? This year, the world’s most trusted trend-spotters gave us both

After an unprecedented year of contrasts came the fi tting news that the Pantone colour of the year for 2021 comes in not one but two hues. And with them came, it could be argued, a welcome hint of certainty. Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow arrived as a welcome pairing, just as some in the industry had been forecasting. And they’ve already begun to make an impact, making their way into


fashion collections with the likes of Gucci and Givenchy incorporating them in their Spring collections. The Pantone Color Institute describe them as “two independent colours that highlight how diff erent elements come together to support one another”. It’s a union they describe as “rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic... it is a story of colour that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly”... as people look for ways


to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope “to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality”. It explains: “PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with
