As sport has moved on so have the surfaces on which they are played. You only need to look at the advances in all-weather pitches to see that. Indoors, such innovation has been particularly intense as manufacturers constantly innovate in the knowledge that every facility has to meet the demands of diff erent uses and frequency. Whether squash, basketball or volleyball courts, gymnasiums, futsal

pitches or dancefl oors, the important thing is that, like the sports they host, they achieve optimum performance. That means supplying the fi tness and recreation industries with fl ooring that provides the ideal experience for each athlete no matter what their discipline. After all, the sports industry is a highly lucrative sector with everyone

from beginners to seasoned professional athletes expecting the best in terms of performance. Multi-use is another important factor. Not only do general surfaces require the perfect balance of factors such as shock

absorption and slip resistance, along with aesthetics and maintenance considerations - what if the hall you are using for squash one day, needs to double as a classroom the next? Traditionally, most of us would be able to point to six main surface types - polymeric rubber, concrete, PVC, wood, natural and artifi cial turf. Indoors, it was usually PVC and wood. Then we moved with the times and into other areas such as 3G artifi cial grass: astroturf fi lled, for example, with rubber crumb particles to keep the grass fi bres upright and featuring shockpad backings that off ered improved joint and muscle protection. Then came granulated cork, an addition that has become increasingly popular of late, and sport linoleum, vinyl, rubber or seamless polyurethane. However a recent game-changer has
