The Middle Ages was a period of European history from about AD 500 to around 1500. It is called the ‘middle’ ages because it refers to the period between the end of the Roman Empire in the fifth century and the start of the Renaissance in the fifteenth century (see chapter 8). It is also called the medieval period. It was a time when there was widespread war and violence. Life was difficult, especially for people at the lower levels of society.
