After Columbus had established settlements in the New World, many others followed him. Explorers continued to explore the rest of the world over the next 200 years. Some of the most important voyages were:
• 1497: John Cabot landed in Newfoundland, Canada and claimed it for the English king Henry VII.
• 1519–1522: Ferdinand Magellan led a fl eet on a voyage to fi nally prove that the world was round by circumnavigating (sailing around) the globe.
• 1642: Abel Tasman was the fi rst European to fi nd Tasmania, south of Australia, and New Zealand.
