Michelangelo spent the rest of his life in Rome. He wrote poetry and designed buildings as an architect. Near the end of his life, he was the chief architect for St Peter’s Basilica. He designed the dome based on ancient Roman ideas, but died aged 89 in 1564, before it was completed. His body was smuggled back to Florence, where he was placed in a tomb under the epitaph ‘il Divino Michelangelo’ (‘the divine Michelangelo’).
