Home Rule and Cultural Nationalism
1884–1914
The Easter Rising 1916
In Ireland, the three decades between 1884 and 1914 were a time of great change. New cultural nationalist movements and organisations began during this period, such as the Gaelic League, the Irish Literary Revival and the GAA. Political ideas such as Home Rule were prominent during this time. The years 1910–1914 saw the passing of the Third Home Rule Bill, followed by the Home Rule Crisis. World War I broke out in 1914, suspending Home Rule and leading about a quarter of a million Irishmen, both nationalist and Unionist, to fight on Britain’s side.
