After D-Day, between June and August 1944, the Red Army launched a massive offensive, Operation Bagration, and drove the Germans from the USSR. In December 1944, Germany launched its fi nal offensive: the Battle of the Bulge, a repeat of their 1940 attack through the Ardennes. However, they were exhausted and were defeated by January 1945. To the east, the USSR resumed its offensive and crossed the Oder River into Germany, heading for Berlin. Red Army soldiers infl icted terrible revenge on German civilians as they went.
