Dictation
Red indicates phonics covered in the unit. Green indicates grammar. Purple indicates an additional activity, revising grammar recently taught. Differentiation For weaker pupils, it is possible to shorten any of the dictation sentences.
Unit 1: Punctuation and long vowel sound /a/ 1. Gerard and Grace stayed on the train to get out of the rain.
2. Aidan’s birthday is the same as Ariel the mermaid.
· Circle the capital letters. Say why these letters get capitals. · Circle the full stops. · Can you find the rhyming words in the first sentence?
Unit 2: Common and proper nouns, and long vowel sound /e/ 1. The queen ate a peach before her speech in the arena.
2. Eve said that these weeds can make you bleed as they are thorny.
· How many nouns can you find in each sentence? · Can you replace the nouns with different nouns? · Why does Eve get a capital letter?
Unit 3: Adjectives and ‘-ie’, ‘-y’, ‘-igh’, ‘-i_e’ 1. Kyle likes flying his colourful kite high in the blue sky.
2. The sneaky spy spied on the silly knight and solved the wicked crime.
· Circle the adjectives in each sentence. · Can you think of other adjectives to replace them? · What does the word ‘sneaky’ mean?
Unit 4: Alphabetical order and ‘-oa’, ‘-ow’, ‘o_e’ 1. The lonely old man looked out the grubby window at the sailing boat.
2. A sharp stone poked through my shoe and hurt my baby toe.
· Put the words from each sentence in alphabetical order. · Which word should come first in alphabetical order: sharp or stone? · Circle the nouns in each sentence.
