Titanic Sinks Comprehension Strategies

Good readers use comprehension strategies to help them understand what it is they are reading. They use these strategies before, during and after reading a text. A strategy is a way of doing something. It is like brain training. If you can train your brain to use comprehension strategies, you will gain more from the text and have a deeper understanding of it. After a while, the strategies will become automatic. They make reading more fun and worthwhile.

This grid shows how you might use comprehension strategies when looking at a new text. As you go through this book, you will learn more about what you can do with each strategy.

Before Reading

During Reading

Predicting – What will the text be about? Visualising – What information can I get from the illustrations? Questioning – What am I wondering about the text before I read it?

Making Connections – This reminds me of something in my own life (text-to-self), something from another text (text-to-text) or something in the world (text-to-world). Visualising – As I read, the pictures in my head keep changing as I gain new information. Questioning – I wonder … Predicting – I think this will happen next because …

After Reading

Determining Importance – What are the key points from the text? Can I summarise them? Clarifying – Was there something that confused me in the text? Word Attack – Is there a word in the text I do not know? Questioning – I wonder why this happened. Maybe it was because … (inferring). Predicting – What did I originally predict? What are the outcomes?

A Using the before, during and after comprehension strategies, try out one or two of the strategies orally as you read the following

comprehension text.

B In groups, make charts for each of the strategies. As you learn more about each strategy, you can add information to that chart. Think of symbols (visual and hand gestures) to go with each

strategy. Take photos of class groupings using these symbols. 1
