Unit 3 6

Writing skills

In pairs. Read the three topic sentences a–c from an essay answering the question in 1. Answer the questions.

a On the most basic level, visitors should find out what activities or behaviour might be unsafe or against the law in the country they want to visit.

b Other habits or behaviour can seem disrespectful to inhabitants of the host country and give a bad impression of the visitor’s country.

c Yet another reason to study the culture of a country before going there is to help a visitor understand and get the best from their experience.

1 Which reasons or examples from your list would support each topic sentence? 2 Can you think of other reasons or examples?

FOCUS Writing

The introductory paragraph in a persuasive essay should explain, in general terms, what the essay is about. It should also contain a thesis statement which shows what the writer’s argument will be.

Read the introductions a–d to an essay about learning the language of a country you are going to visit. Which one is the best? Why?

a Nowadays, everybody can speak some English, so there is no point in learning the language of the country you are going to visit.

b It is often said that a visit to a foreign country will be improved by knowing some of that country’s language. This is true to an extent, but I do not feel it is essential in our modern, globalized world.

c Knowing a little of the language of the country you plan to visit may be helpful, but I don’t think it is absolutely necessary.

d People often say that a visit to a foreign country will be improved by knowing some of that country’s language. For instance, you should at least know how to greet and thank people as that shows respect for your host country.

You are going to write your own persuasive essay. Read the question below. Which of your ideas from 2 can you use in your essay?

People who go to work in a different country must learn about that country’s customs and culture before they get there. Do you agree?

9 Organize your ideas into three paragraphs. Write a topic sentence for each one. 10 Write each paragraph in full. 11 Write an introductory paragraph and a conclusion for your essay.
